  Chapter 1

Hunter stood on the sidelines and tried to ignore that the woman he loved was dancing with another man. When she walked into the church with Dr. Feelgood, he had almost lost his shit. The man was a menace to society. Okay, maybe he was over exaggerating a little, but sarcasm was all he had left. It wasn’t like the thorn in his ass was a drug dealer who sold cocaine and other drugs to the Mexican cartel. If only. No, Dr. Royal Pain in His Ass was more likely to fear the police than to be feared by them. Hunter was pretty sure none of the local cops were on his payroll. But that was beside the point.

Quinton Feelgood was that amazing boyfriend everyone wished they could have. He was sexy in a non-threatening way, tall, kind, funny, and an all-around great person according to the citizens of Mystic Grove. Dammit! Everyone thought Skylar was lucky to have him and right now, she wouldn’t trade him for the world, which made him public enemy number one, plain and simple. His ultimate plan to live happily-ever-after with Sky was in peril because this dimwit couldn’t take a hint to fuck off. Not to mention, she’d been dating Dr. Mötley Crüe for six months. Six, long, fucking months and he still couldn’t figure out what the stubborn woman saw in this man. In his humble opinion, Quinton was boring beyond belief. A turtle had more oomph in his strut than that idiot.

In the past, a simple, well-placed threat would have sent most men cowering to their knees before running for the hills. But not Dr. Feelgood. He stuck to Skylar like glue and it was pissing him off. Everyone knew you didn’t encroach on another man’s woman. And Sky belonged to him whether she was willing to admit it or not. Her denial of their relationship was a minor hiccup he’d been working on since they were in grade school. Over the years, he had gained some ground. Then, he’d let his anger get the best of him and destroy whatever trust he’d gained. Two steps forward… three steps back. It was always like that with them. But little by little, he was easing his way into her heart of hearts. She was just too damn stubborn to realize it.

In a moment of desperation, he’d even stooped to reading girlie magazines for advice. The last article he’d stumbled across focused on how to trick someone into loving you and six other facts about love every man needed to know. It wasn’t that he wanted to trick Skylar per se. He just wanted her to be open to their potential together as a couple. He had tried being a jerk and playing hard to get, but it had only backfired. Instead of falling in love with him, Skylar only harbored anger and resentment. The next option was to stare deeply into each other’s eyes for several minutes while asking a series of intimate questions. He’d tried that too, only to be bitch slapped while a frustrated Skylar walked away. Whoever said love hurts. Like, physically hurts hadn’t been lying.

And if you think love can’t kill you? Think again because he was currently suffering from what the article described as a broken heart syndrome. That… and he was mad as hell. If he had to watch her parade around with one more loser, he wouldn’t be held responsible for his actions. His anger was simmering just below the surface for now because they were at his brother’s wedding. He wouldn’t do anything to spoil Liam and Piper’s special night. But his patience was wearing thin, which meant one wrong move from Dr. Feelgood and he’d rip the man to pieces.

The more he watched them on the dance floor, the angrier he got. He had been trying to break them up for months, but the damn doctor kept coming back for more like a bad habit. The man was a glutton for punishment. When Skylar had learned about him threatening Dr. Feelgood at the Stop-n-Go, she was furious. Now, she barely spoke to him and when she did, it was more of a growl or a hiss than actual words. It was fucking maddening. She wouldn’t even look at him as he escorted her down the aisle. Something had to give soon, or he was going to lose his fucking mind.

Asher quietly approached. “Are you going to glare at them all night or ask her to dance?”

“I haven’t decided yet,” Hunter replied through gritted teeth. “Don’t you have something better to do than torture me?”

Asher shrugged his shoulders and laughed. “Not really. Everything is running smoothly. It’s almost time for Liam to relieve Piper of her garter. You might want to get in line big brother because you need all the help you can get.”

Hunter ignored his brother’s taunting. “What does she see in that guy?”

Asher patted his sibling on the back and shook his head in dismay. “Guess you’ll have to ask her.”

Hunter turned to glare at his younger brother. He would have knocked the smug smile off Asher’s face, but it would have caused a scene. He had promised the bride and groom that he would be on his best behavior tonight. But sometimes, promises were meant to be broken.

“Don’t you think I’ve tried. She won’t fucking talk to me. She’ll sneer at me; growl at me; and ignore me. The last of which she’s perfected. I’ve tried everything to make amends, but when it comes to Sky, I can’t seem to get a damn break.”

Asher raised an eyebrow at his brother. “Is that what you want… a break?”

“No,” Hunter hissed. “I want her. I’ve always wanted her.”

Asher silently stared at his sibling. The agonizing expression on his brother’s face almost made him feel sorry for the goofball. But Hunter had made his bed and now it was time to lie in it. It was also time for the cold hard truth. His brother wouldn’t like it, but
it needed to be said.

“Stop playing games and show her how you really feel. Let her see the Hunter we all know and love. Not the trickster. Not the adrenaline junkie. Not the royal pain in her ass that you’ve become over the years. Stop trying to sabotage her dates. It’s time to man up and go after her, but only if you’re in it for the long haul. Skylar is special and she deserves everything good that life has to offer. Don’t screw this up Hunter because it will be your last chance. She won’t keep forgiving you.”

Hunter stepped into his brother’s personal space and sneered. “Don’t you think I know this? It kills me to see her happily dancing with another man. I’d rip my own heart out before I would ever hurt Skylar. You know this. She’s it for me and it has nothing to do with that damn prophecy. I’ve been in love with her my entire life. But when I’m near her, she drives me insane, which makes me do stupid shit that pisses her off. I know the lame excuse doesn’t dismiss my bad behavior over the years. But…”

Asher gently touched his brother’s chest. “Breathe, Hunter. I’m not the one you need to convince. She’s on the dance floor. Now, pull that stick out of your ass and go ask her to dance.”

Hunter rubbed the back of his neck and tried to relieve some of the tension that had built up throughout the night. His neck and shoulders felt like a stack of bricks. Unmovable and unforgiving. But Asher was right, he needed to calm down and convince the beautiful woman on the dance floor to give him another chance.

“I didn’t mean to bite your head off, Ash. I know you’re only trying to help,” Hunter said as he popped his neck and nodded in understanding. His brother had never steered him wrong. Tapping into people’s feelings was his little brother’s superpower. And let’s face it, he needed all the help he could get.

Asher smiled at his brother before leaning his head toward the dance floor. “You should be apologizing to her, not me.”

  “Message received,” Hunter murmured.

He turned toward the dance floor and tried not to cringe at the sight of Skylar dancing with Dr. Feelgood. Her radiant smile made his chest hurt because he wanted to be the man who put that happy expression on her face, instead of the scowl, she reserved just for him. Doubt and anxiety rolled off him in waves. The ball of fear clutching his chest was palpable, which was the reason he blurted out his innermost fear.

“What if I’m not enough for her?”

Asher clapped his brother on the back and gave him a small shove toward the dance floor. “You won’t know unless you try.”

Skylar watched the intense conversation play out between Hunter and Asher. The younger brother was cool, calm and collected as always. But Hunter was a raging storm, which didn’t bode well for anyone. When he turned and they made eye contact, she tried to ignore the way her body shivered with pleasure. Hunter was the epitome of handsome. At six-foot-one, two-hundred pounds, his dark brown hair, piercing blue eyes and deep baritone voice was intoxicating. She was finding it harder and harder to resist the ruggedly handsome man.

When he began walking toward them, she let out a small gasp. The passionate look in his eyes did nothing to calm the butterflies swirling in her stomach. Maybe, he would ignore them like he had done most of the night. But as Hunter joined them on the dance floor, Skylar knew her luck had run out. She watched with a mixture of anxiety and excitement as he gently tapped Quinton on the right shoulder.

“May I cut in?” Hunter asked as he cleared his throat.

Skylar held her breath as the two men sized each other up. Hunter was taller and broader than Quinton, but she knew her date could hold his own. The man had a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Several minutes passed before Quinton stepped back and reluctantly conceded. The breath she had been holding left her chest in a whoosh. The situation was beyond awkward and it didn’t help that everyone on the dance floor had stopped dancing to watch their exchange.

When the DJ started playing A Thousand Years by Christina Perri, Sky knew the Goddess was conspiring against her. It was either that, or her two meddling cousins who knew she melted into a puddle of goo every time this song was played during a wedding. And this time was no different. When Hunter wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her closer, she melted against his warm body. His woodsy scent was intoxicating. The man smelled good enough to eat and she was tempted to take a bite.

As they swayed to the music, everyone in the room slowly disappeared. Skylar’s racing heartbeat settled into a steady rhythm that matched Hunter’s and, at that moment, they were the only two people in the room. She was surprised how light the big man was on his feet as they moved around the dance floor. It was like they’d been dancing together forever, which should have set off alarm bells in her head, but it didn’t. It only made the feelings she’d harbored bubble closer to the surface, which was dangerous because this man could be irresistible when he wanted to be. He also had the power to destroy her.

When he pulled her closer and began singing in her ear, the glacier around her heart melted even more. This was the sweet, kind, gentle Hunter that she crushed on throughout high school. Not the macho jerk who made her life a living hell. Why couldn’t he be this man all the time?

Hunter pulled Skylar closer and continued singing in her ear. He’d decided to take his brother’s advice and put all his cards on the table.

I have died every day waiting for you

  Darling, don’t be afraid

I have loved you for a thousand years

I’ll love you for a thousand more

  * * *

Skylar closed her eyes and tried not to cry. She needed to hold it together or she’d turn into a blubbering idiot on the dance floor.

“It’s true, sweetheart. I’ve always been in love with you and I’m sorry I didn’t man up and tell you sooner,” Hunter whispered in her ear after he gently kissed her neck.

Skylar tried to ignore how good his warm, soft lips felt on her skin. She’d waited for this moment her entire life. Damn, his timing sucked.

“Hunter,” she pleaded in a raspy voice that wreaked of desperation and desire even to her own ears.

“Look at me, Sky,” Hunter demanded in a gruff voice. “I’m sorry for the way I’ve handled everything. I would never do anything to hurt you, but we’re far from over, sweetheart. You know it and I know it.”

“I don’t…” Skylar sniffled. Why was he doing this now in front of the entire town at her cousin’s wedding? She was here with another man for Goddess’s sake. This was neither the time nor the place to profess their love for one another. Wait! Did she love him? Quinton is a good man, but her body never reacted to him the way it does to Hunter. Why did everything have to be so complicated?

Hunter wiped the stray tear that escaped her left eye and touched his forehead to hers. “Don’t cry, sweetheart. I know it’s crazy, but the thought of you with someone else makes me insane. You’re mine, Sky. You’ve always been mine. Since the day you skinned your knee on the playground when we were six. I knew then that I would protect you forever.”

One minute they were dancing and the next, they were entangled in a passionate kiss that made Skylar’s toes curl. It’s probably why Hunter never saw Quinton coming. She’d never seen the mild-mannered man look so livid.

“You bastard,” Quinton yelled, right before he cold-cocked Hunter with a right hook.

Skylar watched in horror as Hunter stumbled back a few steps before moving her behind him, which was ridiculous because Quinton would never hurt her.
